CCC researcher Jun Liu receives Best Paper Award from the ICA Mobile Preconference

Assistant Professor Jun Liu from the Centre for Communication and Computing received Best Paper Award from the 2014 International Communication Association Mobile Preconference, May 22, 2014. The preconference, now in its 11th year, includes cutting edge scholarship on mobile media and communication around the world.

The paper, entitled Communicating Beyond Information: Mobile phones and mobilization to offline protests in China, employs the distinction between communication and metacommunication to investigate the informational and relational dimensions of the mobile phone in protest mobilization. It argues that, in addition to communicating mobilizing information, protestors metacommunicate their mutual relationships via mobile phones in a mobilization process, which shapes both the practice of information exchange and the perception and interpretation of information. Such kind of metacommunication acts as the pivotal driving force for mobilization and participation in protests as it involves an engagement of reciprocal relationship, generates a sense of mutual engagement, and enhances a feeling of solidarity. The study concludes that the dynamic of the mobile phone as a facilitator in popular protest lies in its embedding of metacommunication beyond information dissemination.
