BODY-UI – University of Copenhagen

Using Embodied Cognition to Create the Next Generations of Body-based User Interfaces

PURPOSE: the aim of this project is to establish the scientific foundation for creating the next generations of body-based user interfaces. The project seeks to understand how using the body to control computers changes the way users think and to demonstrate body-based user interfaces that offer new and better forms of interaction with computers. The long-term vision is to establish a device-less, body-based paradigm for using computers.

METHOD: two methodologies are followed. (1) Empirical studies of body-based UIs to understand their effects on thinking. The research team will use qualitative research approaches (notable, think aloud studies) as well as controlled experiments. (2) The team will also prototype body-based UIs to test particular principles of design, explore ideas for particular body-based UIs, and replicate earlier systems.

PARTICIPANTS: University of Copenhagen.

FUNDING: the project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC), by way of a Consolidator Grant awarded to Kasper Hornbæk.
