Rikke Haugegaard publishes book chapter on military capacity building

cover

CGC researcher Rikke Haugegaard has released the chapter “Kapacitetsopbygning af Ghana Navy Special Boat Squadron: SOF Stabilisering i Guineabugten” i bogen Militære Stabiliseringsindsatser. En introduktion til koncept, erfaringer og fremtid (in Danish), edited by Troels Burchall Henningsen and David Vestenskov.

The chapter, based on Haugegaard’s PhD research, investigates how the Danish defense is working to establish partnerships in the Gulf of Guinea to address threats from terrorism and piracy. It focuses on how instructors from the Frogman Corps train naval special warfare operators in Ghana and explores the cultural dilemmas that can arise in the collaboration on capacity building of the Ghanaian navy.

The chapter emphasises military training as an everyday practice and examines the specific challenges that the Frogman Corps’ instructors face in their collaboration with Ghanaian operators. Based on these challenges, the interests of both Danish and Ghanaian parties in stabilisation and capacity building are discussed through the lens of ‘local ownership’.
